Beatriz Salas presented her MSc thesis, “EVALUATION OF NOVEL PLATINUM-BASED COMBINATION THERAPIES IN 2D AND 3D COLORECTAL CANCER MODELS.” She showed that new platinum complexes display strong antiproliferative activity in both doxorubicin-sensitive and resistant colorectal cancer cell lines, while remaining minimally toxic to non-tumorigenic fibroblasts in 2D and 3D models. The compounds induced apoptosis and autophagy, accompanied by elevated ROS and cell-cycle disruption. When combined with FOLFOX, their cytotoxic and pro-apoptotic effects were significantly enhanced. In vivo studies revealed potent anti-angiogenic activity for FOLFOX and distinct vascular effects for Pt-Methoxy. Overall, her work supports these platinum-based agents as promising candidates for further preclinical development and underscores the value of combinatorial therapeutic strategies. This Thesis was developed within the Human Genetics and Cancer Therapeutics Lab, at UCIBIO, Department of Life Sciences, NOVA School of Science and Technology.

Congratulations, Beatriz!
