A UCIBIO possui competências para a investigação básica e aplicada na interface entre a Química e a Biologia, o que permite abordar questões pertinentes ao nível atómico, molecular, sub-celular e celular, incluindo interações célula-a-célula e dinâmica evolutiva de populações.
O Departamento de Ciências da Vida (DCV) incide a sua actividade no ensino e investigação em domínios da Biologia fundamental relevante para aplicação em áreas da Biotecnologia e Biomedicina.
O DCV é responsável pela Licenciatura em Biologia Celular e Molecular (1º Ciclo), pelo Mestrado em Genética molecular e Biomedicina (2º Ciclo) e pelo Programa de Doutoramento em Biologia (3º Ciclo), colaborando em vários cursos da FCT e da UNL.
O DCV integra uma Secção Científica que agrupa as áreas científicas de Microbiologia, Genética e Biologia Celular. Desenvolve actividades de investigação científica e tecnológica em parcerias Nacionais e Internacionais, participando em projectos de I&D em Microbiologia, Genética Molecular e Humana, Biotecnologia, Nanobiotecnologia e Biologia Celular.
