Bioinformática e Biologia Computacional
Pedro M. Costa
The course consist of a variety of classes focused on Bioinformatics in biomolecular sciences and multiple fields of applications that these can have in different types of industries. The present course aims at guiding students through these methods using a theory-plus-practice hands-on strategy open to graduate and undergraduate students of every background and expertise within life and biomolecular science.
Bioinformatics and biostatistics are paramount tools in modern life science research, across all levels of biological organization, from ecosystem to molecule. As state-of-the-art computational approaches make easy the analysis of large batches of samples or multiple endpoints, biologists, biochemists and researchers from related areas can now discover intricate networks of genes, phylogenetic relationships between species, infer on the structure of proteins or other molecules and identify the causal agents of disease. The span of potential applications if huge, from environment and evolution to biomedicine and drug discovery. Even though the use and underlying principles of these tools may often seem obscure to young researchers, it is all a matter of a good start. The present course aims at guiding students through these methods using a theory-plus-practice hands-on strategy open to graduate and undergraduate students of every background and expertise within life and biomolecular science.
