Carolina successfully defended her Master's thesis in Medical Microbiology entitled "Ceftaroline resistance in MRSA – identification of cell wall modifications".
Infections due to antibiotic resistant bacteria are on the rise and constitute one of the major health challenges of the next decades. Carolina studied the alterations to the cell wall of Staphylococcus aureus, related with resistance to a fifth generation cephalosporin that is used to treat MRSA infections.
This work resulted from a collaboration between the Department of Life Sciences (DCV - Molmicro of Bacterial Pathogens Lab) and the Department of Chemistry (DQ), and was supervised and co-supervised by Professor Rita Sobral (DCV) and Doctor Jorge Dias (DQ), respectively.
Congratulations, Carolina!
