Congratulations to Mariana Abreu for completing the M.Sc. in Molecular Genetics and Biomedicine! She developed her thesis between the SeaTox lab (DCV) and the Biotox Lab (DQ).
Mariana's work focused on the effects of common mutagens and carcinogens that are ubiquitous in our environment on the processes of tissue healing and regeneration. Mariana worked with marine animals that are able to regenerate from radical amputation, namely planarians and cnidarians, and combined toxicological assays, oxidative stress, pathology and molecular genetics to disclose the problem of pollutants affecting DNA integrity and cell cycle on regeneration, highlighting that all organisms, humans included, are exposed daily to hazardous chemicals that can a severe impact on healing.
